When walking into the studio of Michael Hafftka one is immediately greeted by the intense portraits of his muses. Characters he has met along the path of life that have been invited into his world, his studio. Michael captures an essence within his subjects that they themselves might not have even known existed. They stare at you with strength and ferocious passion through Michael’s vibrant strokes of color, cast down with force and purpose. They almost vibrate off of the canvas. Enticing you in, they bring you in close to tell you their story, seducing you to stay longer; daring you to discover each one’s deepest secrets.
For his show Reconciled, Hafftka’s paintings and characters have found a harmony and balance with each other while still retaining their separate identities and unique personalities. In many of his dramatic large scale oil paintings he brings together family, friends and lovers in a touching shared moment which Haffkta elegantly and effortlessly captures. Michael’s gracious invitation into his past and present will give viewers a glimpse into his experience and journey in life. Hafftka bravely shows us the delicate emotional bond he holds with each and in doing so allows us to recognize that bond and inner passion we all share with each other.
